KELLY GALLO -- The death of Kelly Shea Gallo did not come as a surprise this week. Then again, it did. In spite of her illness, the Mills High School teacher/coach seemed to be too tough to die.

Her determination was such that we had assumed that she would somehow win her fight against cancer. Not so. Cancer plays no favorites.

Kelly persevered in a very public manner. She continued to coach her Mills girls' basketball team in spite of debilitating treatments in 2003-04. Her family and friends, along with her players and colleagues at Mills, pitched in to help when necessary.

In the end, she was an example to us all. The Mercy alum was 35 years old when she passed away. Contact John Horgan by telephone at 348-4334.
