Way to Bash Baby-Wearing, Motrin

IbuprofenImage via Wikipedia

Seems the folks over at Motrin thought this would be an effective campaign to appeal to mothers. Not this mom. If anything, wearing my babies made me  (and them) cry less, not more. The ergonomics of the carriers available made baby-wearing more comfortable for me than baby carrying, by far.

Watch Motrin's ad and see what you think? Maybe the blogosphere is overreacting, but I don't think so.

UPDATE: The Motrin ad has been pulled from their site. I believe it's still up on YouTube if you want to hunt for it, assuming you've been under a rock. ;-)

I don't think it's an over reaction at all. That ad is saying that not only are the benefits of babywearing suspect (the "supposedly" attitude in it) but that parents do it, ultimately, to LOOK like parents. That it's some prestige act.

I don't need Motrin.

Just wanted to say Motrin will walk in Monday to a big surpise. Nothing I can add, but how shocked I was. This ad almost seems like a parody. Where were the focus groups--how did this ever see the light of day?

Oh. My. God. What a disgrace! I really am shocked and appalled. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? Who's their target audience for this ad?

Wow. Actually, double wow.

Wow #1: Shock at how the campaign seems to make moms out to be whiny ("What about me?").

Wow #2: As someone in the business of marketing to mothers (start-up company), I am yet again humbled by how a mistake in advertising or portrayal of mothers can have a really serious backlash.

But here's the pro-tip: HELLO! Who is buying brand-name ibuprofen? And why? Generic ibuprofen is the EXACT SAME THING and costs less. I will never, ever understand the purchase of brand-name drugs. It's just marketing. That is the only difference.

xx
